“Ugandan Knuckles” is the nickname given to the character Knuckles, from the Sonic franchise drawn by the Youtuber under the name of Gregzilla. Many players use this avatar in the multiplayer game, “VRChat.”
This meme is known to have began in a virtual reality game called VRChat, a game where players are free to “create and share virtual worlds.” Recently, it has been stirring up controversy due to its racial slurs towards Africans. The infamous line, “Do you know da wae?” comes from a 2010 movie produced by the Ugandan studio, Wakaliwood, called “Who Killed Captain Alex?”
Roxanne Ramos, a junior at Logan, does not seem too pleased with the meme, “I think it shows how incompetent our generation is. I think that even though the accent is racist because it has become popular people feel that it is okay to say.”
Kevin Rojas, a senior at Logan, also seemed unhappy with this joke, “At first I thought this meme was really funny until I read an article about the meme’s origin. It’s really offensive to be honest.”
Many people dislike this meme because it is insulting to Uganda and stereotypes Ugandans in a bad way.
