For the past few years, James Logan students have been fortunate to have Chromebooks available for their technological needs. Three versions are currently in use: Samsung (the oldest), Acer, and Dell (the newest). But recently, these Chromebooks have been encountering many issues, and the repair service isn’t doing much at all.

Understandably, the most common student complaint is the long waiting period for the Chromebooks to be repaired. Some students have waited months and even years for repairs, and what makes it worse are the loaners. Many loaner Chromebooks are outdated, slow, and broken, complicating the process of keeping up with deadlines, notes, and assignments.

The situation is so bad that senior Michelle Yi has not even seen her original Chromebook for two years. “In Sophomore year I gave my Chromebook to the book room to fix, because the screen wouldn’t work properly,” she states. “I haven’t seen it since, and I had to use 3 different loaners.”

In addition, sophomore Gabriel Ramirez recalls, “I charged my Chromebook one night and in the morning […] it [would] only work when the charger was plugged in. I sent it to get fixed and it’s been 7 months.”

For other students, like Deborah Chun, broken Chromebooks have become major inconveniences. “I had all my notes done in my Chromebook, so it irritated me when it started lagging on me,” she explains. “A day later, the screen just froze.”

Furthermore, students like senior Naomi Hawkins believe the repair service is charging overly high price tags . “My chromebook blacked out on me when I was working on an essay,” she says. However, “the book room made me pay 200 dollars to pay it off when I didn’t do any damages.”

Finally, many students are simply stressed out about the poor conditions of the Chromebooks they’ve received. Junior Gia Long even notes that “my Chromebook is basically all wires and plastic at this point […] I’m worried it might explode or electrocute me.”

Whatever the problem is, one thing is for sure: While we’re all very lucky students to be given Chromebooks to use, it doesn’t mean much if they’re breaking all over the place.
