Senioritis is a prevalent problem among many high school seniors. At James Logan High School, there seems to be an abundance of seniors who have caught senioritis.
Dillon Tung feels like senior year isn’t especially important. “I’ve put in a lot of work for the past 3 years,” he said.
Different seniors are excited for different things towards the end of senior year, some are excited for senior activities while others don’t seem to care as much.
Eduardo Salas is mostly excited for prom, “It’s going to be in the tech museum,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sahar Kharie isn’t as excited for prom. She’s excited for the end of senior year, overall.
Many students seem to have already caught the “virus” of senioritis. As defined by Salas, “Senioritis is when you have nothing left to lose so you simply give up on high school in general.”
Sarah McMurry believes many can recover from senioritis, but not entirely.
Admissions officers are eager to catch these particular students who slack off. It’s all uphill on their transcripts with passing grades and extracurricular activities. Then towards the end when the finish line is practically visible, most seniors just give up.
There are many reasons for this behavior. I myself am a senior, and I have caught this behavior. It’s partly because we give up on motivation as students. This journey of high school life is just utterly worthless to me towards the end of the year.
A fellow senior also said, “Low expectations, seeing same people everyday, doing routine and mundane tasks,” is what causes him to fall into the pit of senioritis.
So beware upcoming seniors, because you might eventually catch this “virus”.
