Everyone wants a job that they not only love but gives them purpose. “The Bold Type”, which premiered on June 20th this past summer, follows three friends living their lives as magazine editors for a popular magazine company, “Scarlet”. In the show, Kat, Jane, and Sutton go through events that all young adults can relate to. The show highlights important yet taboo issues like racism, immigration, female sexuality and feminism. The Bold Type embraces female empowerment in the male dominated world of publication.
The show’s main character Jane Sloane, is played by Katie Stevens (MTV’s Faking It), while her two best friends Sutton Brady, played by Meghann Fahy (ABC’s One Life to Live), and actress Aisha Dee (ABC’s Chasing Life) who plays Kat Edison.
The show centers around Jane’s desire to be more than just a magazine editor, but rather to redefine being a female in the writing and editorial industry. She often goes through her struggles as a magazine writer and depends on her friends for emotional support.
The show itself touches on issues that adolescents may face, but they take a more feministic approach. It can be overly dramatic at times, but usually the moral of each episode is relatable and realistic. However there is a lack of diversity throughout the series, as most of the characters are privileged white people, with the exception of three or four characters. Asians are also misrepresented on the show as there is only one Asian character who is barely seen in any episodes. The show often exaggerates some of their topics, like Jane’s problems dealing with her love life. At times it can be predictable and show the stereotypical view of young adult lives.
The show is worth the watch, it’s fresh, vibrant, and a new genre of portrayal of feminism. The Bold Type has recently announced that they will be coming out with a second and third season. The release dates for the series’ second has not been announced yet but should be released soon.
