It may be more common than you think. Students who attend school often graduate and go off to college for bigger and better things, but some return. Some return to the exact same school. Some return to the exact same class. Some return to the class of which they hated and never thought they’d return to. Some end up teaching believing that teaching would never be an option in the future because of the endless minutes, hours and days spent in a classroom during their childhood, teen life. These are students who return as teachers.
Being a teacher turns out to never be a plan for some, but the passion of teaching and educating others can be an amazing experience. Knowing that you’ve made a difference and created positive outcome for someone is worth coming back to school for some. The benefits of being a teacher also isn’t so bad. Starting salary and having holidays and the summer off is totally reasonable. The benefit of health insurance and reasonable hours make being a teacher much easier. Although all these benefits seem great, becoming a teacher isn’t as easy as you think. You have to go to many years of school to get your degree and be educated. You also have to get licensed, and commit to coming to school for a while to be a student teacher, where you observe and watch professional teachers.
Recently I interviewed a current teacher for James Logan High School. He is currently a student teacher for Mr. Pava’s class where he learned to get along with many of the students and help teach on days Mr.Pava isn’t available on. Mr. Peterson never planned to be a teacher in fact he originally planned to join the military. His favorite thing about teaching is interacting with the students and getting the chance to meet new people. The worst thing in his opinion would be the huge amount of time and effort he has to put in, but overall teaching isn’t so bad.
