Logan students interested in medicine and other health-related careers should take notice to the Stanford Medical 2016 Summer Residential Program.
This five-week science- and medicine-based enrichment program, which occurs annually from the middle of June through July, takes place on the Stanford University campus. In the program, students are introduced to many health-related careers while improving their science skills. Students will also get a mentor, that is either a Stanford medical student, a graduate student, or a health/science professional, that will help them with college admissions. The administrators stress that during these five weeks, there won’t be a lot of downtime and the group activities will keep students busy from morning until night. However, the entire experience is completely free of charge for the 24 students that are chosen.
There are some requirements to be able to apply to this program. The program is only open to low-income and/or underrepresented minority high school sophomores and juniors living in northern and central California. Also, only applicants who have a 2.75 or greater GPA are considered, and they must have at least a B-average in some science classes that they have taken. It is also noted that students must have taken adequate science and math courses to understand the lectures and labs in the program.
Each application must include: a Preliminary Application, in which the applicants give their basic background and contact information; an ApplyWed online application; and two letters of recommendation, with at least one of them being from a science/math teacher and the other from their school’s staff.
The Stanford Summer Residential Program is a once in a lifetime experience for sophomores and juniors looking for more insight on medical-related careers. It was said by Yee Leng Vang, an advisor at Oakland Tech High, that students might get to work with cadavers and take science courses during the program. Those interested in this program should act fast as the deadline to apply is February 15th.
