In the middle of an unassuming residential area in North Beach, a long line stretches around the block each Thursday through Sunday for San Francisco’s most viral bakery. Butter and Crumble, founded by baker Sophia Smith, features beautifully laminated pastry and unique flavors in their monthly menus.
Before April’s menu ran out, my fellow baked goods fan Savannah Cannon and I managed to snag a preorder and do a taste test. Here is our verdict.

Lemon Bar Matcha – 10/10
I was a little bit skeptical about the combination of lemon and matcha, but this drink was the perfect balance of tangy, sweet, and an excellent matcha flavor. There was a perfect amount of foam on top, and the crust crumbles added some excellent texture. This was our favorite drink by far, and one of our favorite items overall.
Carrot Cake Latte – 6/10
This was a solid latte, but we didn’t taste much (if any) carrot cake flavor. However, it tasted much better when paired with the carrot cake croissant.
Spinach Feta Croissant – 9/10
Our first pastry was the savory croissant. The layers were incredible. Both the feta and spinach flavors were strong. The textures were really nice (not stringy in the way some spinach pastries can be.) It was a little bit salty, but overall was a great bite.
Twice Baked Carrot Cake Croissant – 10/10
I did not expect to like this as much as I did, but it was both of our favorite pastries in the box. It was incredibly sweet in the best way, the layers were defined, and the brown sugar and carrot flavors were perfectly balanced. The whole thing was topped with a cream cheese frosting that cut through the sweetness. The perfect croissant.
Lemon Blueberry Bun – 7.5/10
Our least favorite pastry, but still excellent. Think of this one as a cinnamon roll with blueberry instead and a tangy lemon glaze. The texture was a little bit dense, instead of fluffy like the best sticky buns are. It didn’t wow either of us but the classic flavors were strong.
Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin – 9/10
This one surprised us with its thick filling and unique flavors. The actual pastry was the best out of the box. Each bite was very messy, as it was sugar dusted and the filling was all the way in the middle. Once found, however, the strawberry rhubarb pastry cream was tangy and delicious. Our favorite part was the cream and strawberries on top, which rounded the flavors out with a lighter touch.
Overall: Butter & Crumble is a must when in the city. Their perfect pastry is absolutely worth the price. Join the preorder list drops every Tuesday to avoid the hour+ line.
