With the trailer for Spider-Man Brand New Day coming out last month. The Courier wanted to focus on thoughts from Marvel fans who are highly anticipating this movie. Tom Holland stars as Spider-Man in the new movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releasing in theatres on July 31st. Many fans can’t wait to see not just Spider-Man, but other actors such as Jon Bernthal, who will be returning as The Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo, returning as Hulk. Villains such as Scorpion and Tombstone are also set to make their live-action debuts in the film. Destin Daniel Cretton is set to direct the film.

Recent news came out explaining how the film will skip over Peter’s college life, enraging tons of fans over the decision who anticipated that Marvel would adapt the struggling college life for Peter. However, this is not the only thing fans seem to be mad about.

Since the Spider-Man suit was revealed in August, fans have been searching hard for any information on the film. Peter Parker would no longer use webshooters, which increased the search for leaks to determine if these rumors were true. Luckily enough, fans got a hold of two massive leaks through a Taki’s promotion ad and a children’s backpack ad, both giving a clear demonstration of the webshooter change, going from the classic webshooters to organic webbing. This has been done before, with Tobey Maguire’s take on Spider-Man from 2002-2007, however, this will be the first time it has changed from the previous movie. Tom Holland used webshooters throughout all the films he was Spider-man, but now he will have organic webshooters. Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man never used webshooters at all, whereas Tom’s has, so this change has left fans confused as to how and why they would change it.

This debate is a very controversial topic amongst fans. Should Spider-Man always use webshooters? Or should he have organic webbing instead? It was also revealed that the film would take place four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has fans even more divided on the story for the movie. Fans wanted to see the struggling, college life Peter Parker, while trying to balance that life with being Spider-Man.

“I hate these changes,” said Marco Lemone, a sophomore at James Logan. “I love Tom Holland’s movies, but these are such stupid changes. They should keep it close to the comics.”

Marco was not the only fan who was frustrated with the changes, Keikona Lealao, a senior, said, “I hate these changes, like why take his web-shooters away? And his college life, too? I was expecting Hulk to be one of his professors.”

Although many fans hated these changes, some did not mind them.

Calvin Aguilar, a senior, said he did not care what they changed. “To be honest, I do not really care if they change his webbing or skip his college life, I just want a great, street-level Spider-Man movie that fans have been asking for from Marvel.”

Many fans, such as Calvin, just want another great movie for the franchise and the character, with some of these fans saying others are asking for “too much.”

“To keep it simple, these fans are just ungrateful,” said Romeo Gonzales, a junior, who states he’s more than a casual Marvel fan. “Like we’re getting Hulk, Punisher, Tombstone, and finally Scorpion. What are people complaining about? Just a few changes doesn’t affect the fact that we might see Spider-Man fight Hulk.”

It’s unbelievable how fans are already so divided over a film that has not come out yet. This may hurt the film as expectations might be too high, which could lead to less money made at the box office. Then again, this is not just a Spider-man film, but Tom Holland’s 4th movie, so fans are still going to show up. All in all, it’s not the fans who are writing and directing the film, so either way fans will still go to theatres across the world to watch Tom Holland reprise his famous role as Peter Parker.
