The Track and Field program at Logan is getting ready to dominate this 2018 season, kicking off their first meet experience with a practice meet “scrimmage” on Wednesday March 7th. The majority of these athletes have put in well over 2 hours of work each day for over 1 month, some since July of 2017.

Athletes are anticipating a successful year with much young talent to be shown during this practice meet. Some are overly excited to display the work they have done throughout off season while others are competing to experience the environment.

Athletes such as Evan Harper, a sophomore in sprints, believe that they “could see some awesome times” this meet. He has put in a lot of work himself.

“[I have] trained the hardest I can this past offseason,”

Others such as sophomire Meinkaye think that this meet “is a good benchmark for this whole season” since it “lets us understand how the rest of the season will end up,”

For the head coach, Aaron Oliver, this is more than just a practice meet, its a chance to beat the previous head coach, Lee Webb, in the 4x400s. The 4×400 event consisted of mainly distance runners under Webbs’s leadership, but as the leadership has shifted to Oliver, the idea of who should run the event has also shifted. Oliver believes that the event should only consist of sprinters, as the 400 meter run is considered a sprint. Prior to this meet, Oliver has been pushing the sprints group through tough practices in order to shape them into runners he thinks will win; Webb is doing the exact same with his group.

“There should not be any distance runners in the 4×4! This event is a sprint and all of you are sprinters, and the 3200 [meter run] is a distance event and all of those guys (pointing at the distance group) are distance runners!” said by coach Oliver.

Like all competitions, there are mixed emotions but only one thing comes across the mind of everyone competing, and that is “to try their best”. We hope the Logan Track and Field program will take home many victories in this upcoming season! Go Colts!
