We asked teachers at Logan what their first jobs were. There was a vast array of responses, with many teachers saying they would never return to their first jobs.
- “My first job was being a receptionist at a dentist and it was at a mall. I was working all hours in the weekends and it was an open business meaning the mall closed but the dentist stayed open. I applied because my dad said that, “if you want to drive a car you have to pay insurance.” It was super boring. It was just me in a dentist office sitting there for 8 or ten hours. Students should get a job because it teaches you responsibility and will justify your attendance. I would never want to work there again and it’s not there anymore anyways. I made 6.50 an hour so i couldn’t afford to live.”
- Mr. Henderson, AP Economics, and economics
- “Landscaping was my first job, laying down pipes for water sprinklers. I needed money and my father wanted me to get work to support myself. I am very respectful to the people who do this and this made me a believer for getting my college degree. It felt as if I am an athlete in training. It was a challenge and i hate gardening. I did this just to get paid just like how I mow my own lawn because of my wife. Don’t be picky about your first job, just get it and it will help your resume and as a doctor’s son my first job was manual labor rather than sitting in an office. It was very exerting and it is better to just have a job especially in today’s economy. If i were to lose this job or not be able to do anything I would go back and do this job, but I won’t be happy. As a person I would just be happy knowing I have an income rather than no income.”
- American Literature and Expository Reading and Writing teacher, Mr.Minor said
- “I worked at a barbecue joint, it was crazy also. This was my first real job and I was 17. I never knew how much rib to give. I didn’t apply because the guy was a friend of my parents. My boss was very demanding and was never clear about what he want to be done with the ribs. I would recommended this job especially if you’re not clear about your duties and you will get the answers to them. No, I wouldn’t go back to my first job, I didn’t really like my boss’ ways.”
- Ms. Allen, Ethnic Women’s Studies
- “My first job was at Wolf Camera, a camera and photography retail chain. I worked there during my high school and college years. I wanted to work there because I loved photography and hoped to be exposed to more photography and photographers. I also got a pretty great discount on photo gear. Find something you enjoy and can serve as a “stepping stone” towards the next step in a career that you are interested in. Don’t worry too much about money in the beginning. This was an entry level position and I would have no reason to work there again.”
- Mr. Dimaano, Photography
- “I was a waitress at a little restaurant at the beach, it was Henlopen Cafe and I loved it. My parents had an apartment near the cafe and the view was nice. I was so happy to work, but they wanted all skinny and blonde haired waitress, I didn’t fit their stereotype that they wanted for the beach. They tried to give my orders late so people had to wait, I had to quit. If you can find a job and you enjoy working there, work there. I would never work there again but i’m sure it’s changed.”
