On September 27, 2014 the 12th Annual Alcatraz Swim with the Centurions was held, and right in the middle of it were a handful of Logan’s own swimmers.
Antoinette Loya and Supriya Sharma, both valued members of the Logan swim team, were the two swimmers who swam the 1.2 miles from Alcatraz island back to the pier.
When asked about how the day went Antoinette answered that “It was fun, and I felt confident going in.”
Coach Lockwood, who worked as a lifeguard for the event, said “The weather couldn’t be any better. It was a beautiful day. There were no clouds, no wind, and the water was 65 degrees, the warmest it’s ever been.”

A majority of Logan swimmers that participated in this event were helpers. This sounds like an easy job, but according to Vivian Lee, captain of the Logan swim team and one of the volunteers, put it, “We were up by 4:30am at least.”
Once at the pier volunteers had to write the assigned numbers onto a swimmers cap, arm, or hand depending on what they were wearing, putting participants’ personal items into plastic bags for them, and even handing out any rewards that a swimmer may have received.
Though the two Logan swimmers didn’t receive any awards their times were good, and the fact that they participated in the challenge is proof enough of their determination and love for swimming.
About 400 people signed up for the event. The swimmers jumped off the ferry boat about8:15am and 22 minutes later the first swimmer hit the beach. By 9:15am everyone was back at shore. Awards were given out for males and females, children (no one under the age of 14 could participate), and wetsuits vs skins.
