John Mulaney’s third comedy special, “Kid Gorgeous”, arrived on Netflix May 1st and you’re in for an hour filled of laughter.
John Mulaney is known for his amazing and captivating storytelling. This time it was no different except it did seem a lot more fast paced than his other specials. Mulaney’s comedy relies a lot on how he delivers the jokes he’s telling. His facial expressions and body movements made a lot of his jokes funnier because you can tell he’s enjoying it just as much as the audience is.
When I was watching it, I noticed some of the jokes sounded really familiar. A lot of his jokes were already given when he hosted SNL to promote the special in his monologue. I was hoping to hear newer jokes and was disappointed when about half of them were some I’d already heard.
Due to this being a bigger venue, the audience’s laughter was a lot louder but Mulaney did a good job at being able to control them when he needed to. The stage was also a lot bigger than his other shows which led to him running across the stage a lot at the beginning but slowed down towards the end.
Some pieces stuck out a lot more than others such as, “Street Smarts”. It highlighted all of Mulaney’s best ways to deliver a story like, impressions, sarcasm, movements, and was just one of the funnier pieces he gave. He’s also just really subtle and nonchalant about most of his jokes that he makes it seem like they shouldn’t be laughed at which just makes you laugh even more.
The stories he gives from his life were so funny and ridiculous that they seem too crazy to be real. He’s one of the best comedians that’s able to share personal stories but make them so that you can still relate to them.
Two of my favorite pieces were the robot test and waving at a boat. Those two really stood out because he delivered them quickly but in such a funny way. The way he performs the robot bit is so relatable and funny because almost every person has experienced having to confirm you’re not a robot just to look at your own stuff online. Also, the waving at the boat piece was hilarious as well because even I’ve wondered why people would just go wave at boats leaving docks back in the day and how ridiculous it’d be to do something like that nowadays.
“Kid Gorgeous” is an hour filled of laughter and fun. His delivery and confidence in sharing his stories will have you laughing even after you finish it. Even if you’re not familiar with his work or a fan of comedy specials, John Mulaney is the perfect person to start watching to get you to be.
