Every year since 2015, Coach Lee Webb hosts a decathlon meet in memory of Logan’s best women’s heptathlon competitor, Arlevia Livingston. This year unlike previous years, the competition was held during the week of spring break, April 4th and 5th.
The decathlon is a two day event that consists of a variety of 10 events in track and field, covering all aspects of the sport. The current world record holder is Aston Eaton with a score of 9045 points. The first day covers 100 meter run, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 meter run, respectively. The 110 meter high hurdles, discuss, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500 meter run is on the second day of competition.
Last year’s competition was a success, with more than 30 athletes including 6 out of school competitors. Payton Young won gold followed by Nick Gammal, in varsity. In the Frosh-soph division, Jared Tansimore won gold followed by Meinkei Kaye. Since Payton Young was a senior, he will not be competing in this years 2018 competition.
“I feel confident in winning considering my scores from last year and there’s really no one this year except Jared who are up there,” said Nick Gammal, an 11th grader.
“I’ll try my best in all the events and see where I end up,” said Jared Tansimore, also a junior.
“I really am not confident in some of the events on the decathlon, like the pole vault, but I’ll try my hardest,” says Meinkei Kaye, a sophomore.
After the first day of competition, Mienkei Kaye had the top score overall with 3115 points, followed by Tansimore with 2924, then Gammal at 2827 points.
“I probably won’t hold this lead after my worst two events tomorrow, but im going to try my hardest just like today,” says Meinkei Kaye.
Jared and Nick passed Meinkei after the 7th event within only 100 points. Jared now becoming the lead scorer.
After all 10 events, Jared Tansimore finished first for varsity with a score of 5237, and also getting on the top 10 list in James Logan History for the decathlon, Nick finished second with a score of 4960, which coincidentally tied the first finisher for the frosh-soph division, Meinkei Kaye.
Outstanding job to all the athletes who competed! This track season is half completed with many more victories to come. Go Colts!
