A passionate speech by ‘Stranger Things’ star, David Harbour, got the crowd to their feet at the SAG Awards.
The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was a successful night for many actors, including the cast of the Netflix original show, Stranger Things. The cast was overjoyed with excitement when it was announced they they had won the award for best ensemble on a drama show. Many of the child actors on the show immediately started hugging each other and getting emotional, as this is was the first large award that the show has ever received.
Following the announcement of their award, a large majority of the cast, including a fan favorite, Shannon Purser, who played Barb, headed to the stage to accept their award. Once there, David Harbour, who plays Chief Jim Hopper in the show, took hold of the mic and began his speech. He began by thanking the creators of the show and his fellow cast members. Next, Harbour spent time talking about the recent presidential election and his feelings towards it. His speech consisted of a lot of passionate words towards President Trump, most of which got strong reactions from the audience. Harbour concluded his speech by saying, “We, as 1983 mid westerners, will repel bullies, we will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no home, we will get past the lies, we will hunt monsters, and when we are lost amongst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals in institutions, we will as Chief Jim Hopper did, punch some people in the face!”
It was after this line that Harbour was given a standing ovation, along with many whistles and screams from the audience. His fellow cast members hugged him and then walked off the stage alongside him. Throughout the next few days, Harbour’s speech was massively spoken about on all social media sites. His comparison of Donald Trump to the show’s “demogorgon” was definitely something that will be remembered.
