Recently graduated senior Josh Trejo and fellow alumnus Wayman Gooch, now an Ohlone College sophomore, have been selected in the recent Major League Baseball First Year Players draft.
Trejo,a 6-foot-1, 215-pound lefty, gets a chance to play for the Milwaukee Brewers organization, while Gooch was selected by the Colorado Rockies.
The Milwaukee Brewers took Trejo in the 27th round; he was the 821st overall pick.
Trejo went 5-0 during Mission Valley Athletic League play for the Colts this year. He compiled a 1.75 ERA, allowed only seven earned runs all season and had 42 strikeouts in 28 innings, helping the Colts to a 12-0 league record and a second straight league championship.
Last year, Colts Coach John Goulding, started then-junior Trejo on the senior-laden squad. Trejo went 5-4 on the mound for the Colts with a 3.74 earned run average, walked only 24 batters in 54 1/3 innings and struck out 85 hitters. Against Irvington, he put up a 13-strikeout performance in which he allowed only 2 hits in 7 2/3 innings. Trejo started in 2 of the Colts’ 4 CIF Playoff games as a junior.
Back in February, Trejo had signed a letter-of-intent to attend Arizona Western College, where he would be teamed with former Colt Stephen Barbosa, now an AWC Matador infielder.
Trejo has until August 15th to decide between playing for the Brewers organization or for AWC, located in Yuma, Arizona.
The Colorado Rockies selected former Colt Gooch, a right-handed pitcher, in the 33th round. He was the 1000th player selected.
This year for Ohlone, Gooch went 8-1 with a 3.46 earned-run-average. He struck out 86 batters in 91 innings, starting 11 games and completing six of them, a team high. He also had a save.
The draft was held June 7 and 8 at Walt Disney World at The Milk House inside Disney’s Wide World of Sports facility. For the first time, it was televised (on ESPN.)
There were 50 rounds of drafting spread over those two days, and, by the end, 1.453 players had been chosen as prospects.
