M.E.Ch.A is one of the many clubs here at James Logan High School. It’s student-ran and it’s advised by Ms.Esquivez, an ethnic studies teacher.

“M.E.CH.A stands for Moviemiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan which means Chicano lead movement.” Ms.Esquivez explained.

M.E.Ch.A. was started in the 60’s and 70’s but then apparently stopped.  It was recently started back up in 2001. Ms.Esquivez was a member herself in high school. As soon as she started teaching she helped the advisor and then eventually took over.

In M.E.Ch.A they do a lot of community service, help the people in need, organize an annual car show in May, and also have a Raza graduation in June. Through these activities they learn about the culture.

Ms.Esquivez’s favorite thing about being advisor is “working with the different people that she doesn’t usually get to work with.”

National M.E.Ch.A is known for being the largest organization Raza youth group in the United States. It’s not as common as it was before, we are one of the few high schools that is still running the club in California.

If you would like to learn more about the Latino culture, M.E.Ch.A meets every Tuesday after school in room 407.
