During last night’s 2017 Grammy, Beyoncé took the stage to perform two of her lesser-known songs from the Grammy-nominated Lemonade, “Love Drought” and “Sandcastle.” With the help of holograms and projections, she transformed the stage into a dream-like palace where she transformed herself into a goddess.
She started the nine-minutes performance with an interplay of herself in the flesh with film footage of her pregnant form projected onto a scrim. With dancers mixed with holograms, lights mixed with falling flower petals, she walked among multiple projections of herself and sat on gravity-defying chair, drawing similarities to various goddess iconographies.
Then the dancers surrounded her, presenting her as the center of a blossoming flower, both physically with their choreography and figuratively reminding people of Beyoncé’s pregnancy. Nurturing twins inside of her, Beyoncé utilized voiceover to deliver a speech on motherhood and healing.
As she sang into the second song “Sandcastle,” she sat in flowers with light glowing behind her. Once again, she amazed everyone by belting out the slow-yet-powerful ballad. The gut-wrenching lyrics, along with soul-shaking singing, marked a new highpoint of her career.
Smiling into the camera in her golden ensemble, Beyoncé concluded the performance.
“If we’re going to heal, let it be glorious.”
