Astrology in a Nutshell

To some, astrology is a generalized concept 12-year-olds are obsessed with; to others, it is a way to be in tune with yourself and the earth.

Astrology, as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects.”

Lily Salcedo comments on why she does believe in astrology by stating, “I believe in astrology but to an extent, while horoscopes and birth charts can be less generic, it’s not like astrology is going to tell me the name, date, and exact time I’ll, I don’t know, I’ll get married you know? It helps with inner peace and providing further insight with our connection as humans to our universe.”

To say that all people born within Pisces (February 19-March 20) can’t function without being emotional at least once a day is an exaggerated and non-applicable generalization. That’s why there are birth charts. You can think of birth charts as a snapshot of the planets and stars positions when you were born. Your birth chart will give you a precise breakdown of what your traits are.

You can find out your personalized birth chart at www.cafeastrology.com, www.dynamicastrology.com, or www.alabe.com. These websites give you an interpretation of your chart after they calculate your birth location, time, and day so you won’t have to go through the headache of remembering what your sign in each planet means.

Birth charts consist of your signs in the sun, ascendant, moon, all 8 planets (yes, including *****), and Chiron. Your sun sign is the sign that resonates with you the most at your core, the one where your birthday lands on. For example, mine is Taurus because I was born on May 4. Your moon sign rules your emotions and how you tend to deal with them. Your ascendant (a.k.a. rising) sign can be interpreted as your “first impressions” sign. For instance, I feel like my moon and rising sign are accurate to myself as I am a moon Libra and a rising Leo. I have this confident demeanor that some people comment on when in reality, I’m far from it, but I’m glad that facade saves me! My Libra moon sign is very in line with my emotions and how I deal with them because I value balance in assessing my emotions and situations reasonably.

Dillon Goulart backs up why he doesn’t believe in astrology with saying that, “I don’t believe in it because it seems so generic and like a myth, it’s fun, don’t get me wrong but I think it’s just that.”

Each planet has its own characteristics that it rules. Mercury rules timing, interests, communication, and everything intellectual. Ever heard anyone say “oh my gosh, Mercury is in retrograde?” That’s because when a planet is in retrograde, it is going in the opposite direction of its orbit’s usual direction meaning everything that planet rules will be the opposite. Venus rules love (and how you go about it), appearance, and money. Mars rules attraction, motivation, and physical energy. ******* rules skill, talent, life lessons (and how you process from what you learn) and extreme behavior. ****** rules attitude, commitment, and maturity. Uranus rules awareness, change, and rebelliousness. Neptune rules what you need to let go, and intuition. ***** rules power and transformation. Chiron rules spirituality and healing.

Basically, the sign that resides in those planets can give insight as to why (your sign’s traits) you do (ruling characteristics of those planets) what you do. For example, Pisces in Uranus may mean that you tend to live in your own world and that change and rebelliousness is a foreign territory that you will need to take your time exploring.

Junior Lauren Arreguin adds that “Astrology is a very valid thing in my eyes. It must be true that the alignment of stars and planets are able to affect an individual based on when they are born.”

Use astrology as you please, whether it’s to predict your day, highlight your good characteristics and characteristics that could use some improvement, or see if you and your crush are compatible… whatever floats your boat!
