American Idol premiered the other night on it’s new network, ABC, evoking mixed responses from those who tuned in.

I don’t see a solid reason as to why they brought back this singing competition because while it was gone, most people moved on to shows like The Voice. People, especially the younger audience, don’t watch TV like they used to and shows like this see a drop in viewers halfway through the season. It’s hard to continue watching a shows nowadays because people either forget when it comes on or have better things to do than watch an hour long singing competition.

Most high schoolers would rather choose to watch the highlights of the show on Twitter or Youtube. Especially because the show isn’t planning to air the “bad” auditions which are the ones that most people enjoy watching and laughing at. When you have more exciting and dramatic shows like, The Voice or X-Factor, American Idol just seems old and outdated.

“It’s repetitive,” said Junior Dillon Goulart, “even my mom who loved the previous seasons got bored.”

Katy Perry seemed to be the main judge who stood out. Most of the contestants didn’t seem to care so much about Lionel Richie or Luke Bryan because they aren’t as popular as Katy. You could tell when the younger contestants auditioned they were excited to see Katy because she’s the most relevant to their generation and not so much the other judges. She adds excitement that the other two judges lack.

“It’s not as entertaining as The Voice or the X-Factor,” said Lily Salcedo, “It lacks the drama that previous seasons had and it’d be my last pick if I were to watch TV”

The contestants do seem really talented and a couple of them tug on your heartstrings when they explain what pushed them to audition. However,  I probably won’t be tuning in for the next episode and would prefer to just see the highlights on Twitter.

The show should have remained done when they first ended it because they’re trying to drag out something that doesn’t need to be.
