Rap legend J Cole’s latest project is “KOD”, an exciting album that has broken the record for Apple Music’s first-day streaming. According to The Verge, “KOD” amassed a staggering 64.5 million streams within 24 hours, and is primed for the number one position on the Billboard Top 100.
For such a thrilling album, “KOD” has actually made J Cole a more divisive figure than ever. The rapper touches on topics such as drugs, addiction, and money, all while delivering a deep message through his songs. Nevertheless, J Cole’s musings, concerning his childhood hardships and his mother’s struggles with alcohol, allow the listener to more personally connect with his nuanced character.
Logan senior Vedparkash Singh commented that he especially “liked the album. It talked about addicts and facing your own demons.” Vedparkash’s favorite song as ‘ATM’, where J Cole talked about the lust for money. “I would recommend this to someone going through a rough time”, he says. “It provides some good advice.”
Indeed, Pitchfork notes that J Cole empathizes with those suffering from depression, as well as gun violence victims. For just the rapper’s fifth studio album, “KOD” remains surprisingly dark, yet meaningfully stirring.
Furthermore, student Andy Santana enjoyed how J Cole talked “a lot about the real stuff within the world.” He believes that many people from different backgrounds can relate to the songs, and would highly recommend it to everyone. “‘Window Pain’ is my favorite song”, he says.
With each of his releases, J Cole simply keeps getting better. If you’re feeling especially down, or if you just want some time by yourself to reflect on life, “KOD” is the album for you.
