The Super Bowl has something exciting for everyone. Most enjoy the game, some like the commercials, others just enjoy hanging out with their friends and eating copious amounts of guacamole. But for many people, the Super Bowl Halftime show is the highlight of their “Super Sunday”
This year at Super Bowl 50, taking place at Levi’s Stadium, the halftime show consisted of Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Beyonce.
The show started with coldplay on stage performing hit songs “Yellow”, “Viva La Vida”, and “Paradise.” For the entirety of their performance, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin was hopping up and down frantically, as if trying to stay on beat. Throughout the show, Coldplay seemed out of place to me.
Soon Bruno Mars appeared on stage armed with a fresh, lightly activated, jerry curl and four background dancers. The artists, clad in all black leather outfits and gold chains, started dancing to “Uptown Funk” in perfect unison. All of the dancing, especially Mars’, felt extremely smooth and flowed nicely. They all seemed to be having a good time. Throughout the performance, I was reminded of a young Michael Jackson.
Suddenly fireworks went off at the five yard line. As the camera moved down the the middle, the University of California Marching band split apart to reveal Beyonce, standing in the middle of the in zone with her background dancers, all dressed as a Black Panthers. The lights shined bright on her and her hair seemed to always be blowing in the wind as she danced and strutted towards centerfield, performing her brand new song “Formation.” The choreography was almost perfect, but Beyonce did trip and nearly fall at one point. Luckily for her, she reacted quickly and saved her performance.
Beyonce’s Black Panther themed performance has caused some controversy among conservatives, accusing her of being “anti-police” and for “race-baiting.” Many other people felt as though Beyonce was “advocating for terrorists”
Once all three headliners were on stage, the screen suddenly, and rather jarringly, shifted to a montage of past super bowl performances. Images of Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Aerosmith, and Bruce Springsteen flashed before my eyes. The segment was cool, but it felt really sudden.
The half time show, in my opinion, went well. I wish that it was at night, fireworks just look better at night. It wasn’t the best show ever, but it worked well.
What did other Logan Students think?
“ I feel like Beyonce and Bruno Mars destroyed it.” said Erik Matibag (Sophomore), “They really stuck out a lot more than Coldplay did. I found it funny when they were dancing and Coldplay was just there.”
