2015 is officially California’s fourth year of record breaking drought that has many worried and making the effort to conserve while others are ignorant and feel it is a problem that will go away on its own.
Annie grade 10 comments on how citizens are responding to the drought. She states “People say ‘oh we are running out of water’ but still waste [it] taking long showers or baths and don’t turning the faucet off when doing the dishes. While it it is an important matter, most people aren’t taking it that seriously.”
“I’ve seen pictures of lakes that have completely dried up, some cities are completely out of water and I’ve also heard that if we do get any kind of water, it normally goes down to Southern California” stated Annika a junior. She sticks to ten minute showers, doesn’t water her lawn and is open to finding more ways to conserve.
Bill a senior, is from Las Vegas and has no trouble adjusting his water usage. Bill explains “Over there, we are accustomed to saving water. The way I save water in the shower is I play a song, by the time the song is almost over I should be getting out of the shower.” For those who are struggling to reduce, he says “If [people] have a visual of how every year, the amount of water [they] have to use is reducing, then it would really help [them] get into the mindset to conserve.”
California’s drought can be seen as a minor setback in our environment that in time, will reverse and go back into balance again. But in understanding that along with other factors, our high water usage has also contributed to this drought, we can take the responsibility for our part and educate ourselves on fixing this issue.
