This last Sunday, the infamous 2015 VMA’s were held. The show is broadcasted on MTV every year and is20929933596_2495bcafc2_o famous for a lot of different reasons. Big awards are given out such as Video of the Year, Best Male/Female Video, and Best Rock Video. Miley Cyrus hosted this year with no fear whatsoever. She was really open with her words, as was Nicki Minaj. The confrontation they shared on stage was one people will not forget. Besides all of the drama, there were other things to be happy about. For example, all of the mind blowing performances. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their newest single, Downtown, literally in Downtown L.A.. Twenty One Pilots collaborated with ASAP Rocky and did a mashup that blew everyone’s minds. Miley Cyrus closed the show her brand new song Dooo it!, not to mention she had a bunch drag queens to help her out, dancing along to the simple, yet catchy beat.

One thing that stood out from the whole night was Kanye West’s acceptance speech for the Vanguard award. The last thing he said before leaving the stage was that he was going to run for president in the year 2020. By that time a lot of us students will be able to vote, so this does affect us in a big way. That’s why The Courier asked students their opinions on the whole situation.

“He’s good with his words, his goals are good. I think the only flaw are the Kardashians. Other than that he does have a lot of influence on us, the kids of the future,” says Mica Ramos 12th grade.

Josh Ashford, another senior, agrees saying, “I think he’s serious and most likely to have a strong campaign.”

But not everyone think he’d be the greatest choice. Annalycia thinks “he might be fit to be a president if he’s more serious about the country itself. As of right now, I don’t really think he is. I feel like he did it because he was in the moment.”

There were tons of performances, as stated before. Some stood out more than others, so The Courier asked students what was their favorite performance was, and why.

“Nicki Minaj, just Nicki Minaj though, by herself. Taylor Swift kinda ruined it, but Nicki was 10/10. Nicki deserved that Video of the Year award. Taylor wins too much I’m sick of her, I love her, but I’m sick of her,”says junior, Jannete Rodriguez.

“Twenty One Pilots were my favorite performance. I’m so happy they’re getting some recognition, Tyler (lead singer) rapped and sang his lungs out. Josh did awesome on the drums. ASAP Rocky worked well with them, it was amazing all together,” Anastasia Lopez, a sophomore says.

Josh Ashford liked “Macklemore because his performance wasn’t too inappropriate.”

Inappropriate was another word often used referring to Miley’s extreme outfits on Sunday. There is no shame affiliated with her when it comes to being herself.

“I thought they (her outfits) were way too inappropriate especially for TV,” says senior Casey Villa. “The outfit that was clear and just had balls, like what was that? Then there was another one, she had that confetti looking jacket, then she took it off, and it was like a swimsuit. I didn’t like it. I know she tried to make a statement, but no.”

“They (her outfits) were dumb, just like her,” expresses Salvador Esquibel, a freshman here at Logan.

But not everyone was displeased with Miley.

Anastasia Lopez insists that “she’s so inspirational, I love her. Queen, slay.”

Not everyone was surprised by it either. Tommi Oatisa, a senior, says, “you kinda expect at an award show like that. If it was the Grammy’s I’d be really disappointed. I think it’s extremely raunchy, but MTV is raunchy. So I wasn’t really shocked.”

Nicki Minaj’s outburst toward Miley did not go unnoticed at the VMA’s either.

Jovanna, a senior here, “thought it wasn’t real. I read about it after that Miley said Nicki was mean. I think it defeated the point for her to call her out, cause she looks mean doing that.”

“You know how a lot of the times those things are staged?” Tommi begins. “Basically, I feel like that wasn’t staged, I think that’s serious and Miley needs to watch her back.”

So whether or not you watched the show or it isn’t your best interest to do so, hopefully this article caught you up on what you missed.
