During these past few weeks, there has been an uproar from many minority groups about the acts of violence, racism, and xenophobia on Asian businesses and Asian people in America. The ones who have been easily targeted to attack are elders. These recent attacks are assumed to be related to the rise of COVID-19. Unfortunately, the media has yet to cover some of the unprovoked violence against this minority group. Why is that? Is there not enough protests around to get the attention? Is the media just ignoring this particular issue? No matter what, there should be more coverage about these horrible hate crimes against innocent Asian-Americans.
Asian people have been blamed for the outbreak of COVID-19There has been blatant racism against Asians ever since the pandemic has started, even before. The former president, Donald Trump calling the Coronavirus the “China virus” was one of the reasons which sparked this unnecessary hate towards asians. Until recently, things have taken a turn for the worse locally. In San Francisco, Vicha Ratanapakdee, who was an eighty four years old Thai man, was brutally attacked and killed. Another attack occured in New York, when Noel Quintana, who was a sixty one year old Filipino man, was on the subway and was attacked with a box cutter. Then, in San Jose, an unknown Vietnamese woman was robbed and assaulted. We found out about some of these attacks ONLY through social media. There has yet to be any news coverage about this type of issue.
As a seventeen year old Filipino girl, with two Filipino parents and grandparents, it is horrible having the thought of them being berated in public for absolutely no reason. This could apply to anyone who is of Asian descent as well. It is scary that the world has become more and more angry at people of color. There is no reason why the news is not covering these sort of attacks. With the help of social media, the topic is getting more attention for it to be spread slowly all across America. Due to this issue, there are more protests that have been happening lately as well.More attention will bring more justice for those who have been assaulted. These attacks are unjustifiable and should be put to an end.
