The xx released their third studio album, I See You, on January 13th.

The xx is an indie pop and dream pop band hailing from London. They formed in 2005 in the town of Wandsworth. Their debut album released in 2009, xx, gave us hits such as “Intro.” It hit the number eleven spot on the UK Indie charts.

Three years later, they dropped their record Coexist. This album reflected the group’s minimalistic music style even more that their debut, with songs such as “Angels.” That lead single reached a new high at number two on the UK Indie charts!!

In between their 2012 release and the new record, Jamie xx, the producer of these albums and the guy who controls all of those electronic beats in the background of the group’s hits, released In Colour, his solo debut, in 2015. While the record was well received by fans, they wanted a new group album.

Finally, our thirsts were quenched last Friday. But, this album was something different. The xx upgraded their minimalistic sound, as aforementioned, to something more expansive. A thick and heavy disco throb is heard throughout the record, most notably in “Dangerous.”
The early single “On Hold,” includes a hook from Hall and Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That.” The easily recognizable nature of the piece makes the single stand out. When the single was released by itself, it seemed like the group was trying to hard, or that it was forced. Now, with the release of the full record, it makes perfect sense and encompasses the xx’s essential sound.

The result of this new release is a new, unguarded xx, and people could not be more confused, but excited.
