In the past month and a half, several tardy sweeps have been taken place here at James Logan. At the beginning of the school year, teachers were emphasizing how strict the staff will be on tardys this year.
Tardy sweeps happen randomly and unannounced. They take place right after the finalbell rings. During a tardy sweep, CST’s go around campus and bring any students that are found outside of class without a hall pass, and they bring them to their house office.
Our principal, Ms.McNamara, reported that if a student is caught outside of class during a tardy sweep, the student will have to call home and they will receive a detention.
Ms.McNamara expresses, “We hope that by doing these sweeps, we make students aware of the importance of being on time.” Ms.McNamara also confirmed that tardy sweeps will in fact be a year round practice here at James Logan.
Over the past few years, James Logan has not been very strict about coming into class late, and students will sometimes take advantage of that. This year, the James Logan staff will be stepping up in order to teach the students the importance of attendance and being on time. When asked about the increased strictness on tardys, Ms.McNamara replied, “We really want to send the message home that everyday counts!”
Tardys are problems that can easily be prevented. Students should try a different route to class if the route they take makes them late to class. Students should also try to ignore the urge to talk to friends while walking to class.
“Being on time is an important skill-we need to practice it and work on it all the time,” Ms.McNamara exclaimed, “It’s the #1 reason people get fired -they are late or absent from work!”
