On April 12, 2016, the students of the JLHS Auto Technology class became the national winners of Samsung’s “Solve for Tomorrow” competition.

Over the past few months the students of the Auto Tech class and Mr. Mohamed all worked together to design and build the first student-built electric vehicle solar charging station to demonstrate their ability to solve practical, real-world issues affecting our community.

A large amount of support and donations was needed in order to meet the requirements. Contributions included MK Battery, Clipper Creek, Inc., Gigavac, and Sequoia Barss. Also, contributions from the all the JLHS students and staff who flooded social media with the hashtags: #SamsungSolve #SamsungSolveMVROP

As winners of this competition, Mr. Mohamed and his students received $120,000 in Samsung technology for their program (including the $20,000 for state winners,) $9,720 of Adobe Software, and a Samsung laptop and Galaxy Camera.

But the better of their winnings was on April 13th, when student representatives were given the opportunity to participate in President Obama’s sixth and final White House Science Fair. The event includes more than one hundred top science, technology, engineering and math students from across the country who demonstrated their projects in a showcase of student innovation.
