In the recent news of the shooting of Stoneman Douglas High School, Logan students voiced their opinions on gun control.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, located in Parkland Florida, was gunned down by an expelled student by the name of Nikolas Cruz on February 14th of this year. 17 innocent people were killed by this young man, and Logan students have strong opinions on both the political aspect and their safety.
Students at MSDHS aren’t the only ones standing up for change, but schools all around the nation are fighting for change with the gun control laws. Politicians are constantly shutting this down, stating that the teenagers fighting are too young to know how and why rules should be changed.
Jasiah Vargas, a senior, says, “I think it’s really important for us to stand up. Even though we aren’t too affected by this school shooting, we’ve got to stand up with our brothers and sisters in Florida to make sure things like this don’t happen again. It’s actually a blessing to know that we go to a school where we have the opportunity to speak out what we need. Not only this but come together to make real noise.”
Freshman, Steven Dinh, states, “It’s crazy what’s going on lately. It seems like every week there’s something terrible happening in America. It’s time to like, make a change because we can’t live in a country where situations like this become a regular routine. It’s weird that things like this don’t happen in other countries. Maybe us doing the walkout will help the government know that we (teens) are important, and our voice means something.”
11th grader, Ruben Navarro, says, “It sucks what people have been doing. I feel that we need to start loving one another, so no one feels the need to do something horrible. Maybe the kid that shot up the school up in Florida was bullied. Not excusing what he did, but I’m just saying, I believe if we take care of one another as siblings, then America would be a safer place. The walkout is a dope idea, hopefully, it makes a huge impact. Peace!”
Students at James Logan are passionate about something that’s happened on the complete other side of the country. We are coming together as a cohesive unit to stand up, make a change, and get what we feel is right.
