The week before spring break, maintenance staff found a bird’s nest in the PA system.

Days before the nest was found, speakers in some classrooms were not working.

“It was the speakers in the 400’s and 500’s classrooms,” Vince Belloni, now a former maintenance crew member, told The Courier. Once they were notified of the problem, the Sound and Signal team was called out to fix it.

“Sound and Signal traced it to a junction box on the wall by the weight room,” Belloni says. Somehow a bird had gotten in there. There was a large, 2ft nest inside that was laying against the electrical wires, which shortened them out.

When asked if incidents like this occur often, Belloni said, “These weird little things happen every once and awhile.”

The birds were long gone by the time the bird’s nest was found by maintenance staff. Belloni says there was a hole in the junction box that closely resembled a hole of a birdhouse.

He is not sure how long the birds may have occupied the box, but says the nest has most likely been there for about 10 years.
