Procrastination: everybody does it.
With whatever task it may be, the time needed to do the task itself ironically ends up being shorter than the amount of time we spend stressing and putting it off until the last minute.
In this article, Logan students discuss the task of homework and their difficulty refraining from procrastinating.
Sameer, a sophomore, told usthe reason he struggles to do his assignments. He explains “I don’t usually have a lot of homework assignments so when I do get them, I’m used to not doing anything so I don’t do them until last minute, like at lunch. Times between classes, during easy classes, and at lunch are essential times to catch up on homework.”
Homework can be dense and difficult, making social media, television, and other activities more desirable.
“Sometimes it’s too difficult and I don’t feel like using my brain too much and doing a lot of research and I just end up watching Netflix” stated Malcolm, grade 10. Tv shows are big factors of time consumption due to their time length of thirty minutes to an hour.
While some procrastinate because they fear the difficulty of an assignment, others just put it off out of laziness and habit.
“I just don’t want to do it. I wish I would do it because it makes it harder, but I just don’t. I’m not used to doing it, and now it’s become a habit” stated Anthony, a senior.
Kiani, another senior explains “I just lay down on my bed and do anything other than homework. Most likely I am on my phone, texting, on Instagram and Twitter.”
Grade level doesn’t determine how much a student will procrastinate. Procrastinating on homework is a result of habit and stress over the difficulty in an assignment. But by understanding that procrastinating is far more stressful than taking the time to do an assignment, you can be better aware of when you start to procrastinate and instead go straight into doing your assignment to break a bad habit and form new ones.
