The James Logan block schedule has come to an end after two weeks and has left a lot of students as well as faculty with mixed feelings.

On Monday April 17th, the entire school went on block schedule in order for the juniors to take their SBAC test. Students and teachers had to adapt to being in a classroom with the same class for two hours. Students attended three periods for two hours each every day rather than their usual six. 4th and 5th period lunch joined into one.  Around 4000 students had lunch all at once and was approximately an hour long. Many students complained about this change, but many also enjoyed the schedule.

Students argued that they enjoyed block schedule because they could do more homework during the class period and they still had another day to do it. Teachers also liked the block schedule because they had more time to teach. Many teachers find themselves running out of time everyday and with two hours of class for two weeks, they were able to cover everything they needed to. A large amount of students have said that they are sad that block schedule is over and that they no longer like the regular day bell schedule.

Although many liked the block schedule, there was also a variety of teachers and students that did not. Many teachers felt that it was useless to have two hour classes when most of their students blanked out halfway through their classes. Since kids were only used to one hour intervals and six different classes, it was hard for students to engage in the same subject for such a long amount of time. Also, teachers felt it was hectic to deal with the same students for two hours because of how impatient they would begin to be. Another thing that many students and faculty can agree on is how they did not like the terribly long lunch line. They complained that the lines were already long while having half of the school in each lunch period, let alone all 4,000 in one lunch.

Many teachers on campus used this time for AP prep considering the fact that AP testing began the week after block schedule was over. Teachers spent two hours working on practice tests, essays, extra practice, etc. Whatever was needed as a last chance to prepare for the AP exam. AP Language teachers got the administration to push back the English SBAC in order to review for the AP exam. However, students are going to have to make it up after exam week is over.

Overall, block schedule began to be a very controversial topic. Many people wanted the block schedule to be permanent, yet others couldn’t wait for it  to be over. Either way, Logan is back to their regular bell schedule to finish off the rest of the school year.
