Although country isn’t all too popular in the music industry on the West Coast, Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye have made a statement in the genre, as they are the artists of the current top song on country radios. This has made a name for the now nineteen and twenty year olds, broadening their fame among both those who appreciate country music and those who do not.
According to an article from Moxie, their hit, titled “Girl in a Country Song”, “topped the prestigious Nashville Scene Annual Country Critics’ Poll for Single of the Year, racked up over 23 million VEVO views, a Gold-certified single and sparked a national conversation about a girl’s place in country music that included Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker. In addition, the duo garnered three CMT Music Awards nominations for Breakout Video of the Year, Duo Video of the Year and the top honor Video of the Year.”
Maddie and Tae said they had no idea their song would go so far when they first wrote it on St. Patrick’s Day. They interviewed recently with CountryMusicRocks, and when asked if Tae thought “Girl in A Country Song” would go as far as it did, she responded humbly, saying, “There was no way to guess what the reaction would be, and we wrote [it] from our hearts. It’s very true to us, and it’s just icing on the cake that fans are reacting to it and appreciating it and loving it just as much as we do.”
Maddie was very upfront with her own response when asked by CMR how it felt being an underdog in the industry. “We feel blessed to be welcomed with open arms, because that’s not normal,” she said.
Both girls agreed that because the themes in music can be difficult to relate to, “especially for girls” according to the CMR interview, the hit’s success means even more to them.
Another hit by Maddie and Tae that readers can reference is “Fly”, which has been circling country radio stations for quite a while now, and their debut album “Start Here” was released just August 28th. The girls are young, beautiful, and ready to be noticed as incoming new artists in the industry.
