M.E.C.h.A club will be hosting this year’s annual canned food and toy drive.
All students and teachers will have the opportunity to “adopt” a family. Once you “adopt” a family, all of your canned food, money, and toy donations will be going directly towards the family in need.
“We ‘adopt’ around fifteen families a year and provide for them“ commented M.E.C.h.A club secretary and Courier editor-in-chief Jessica Esquibel, “and all of the donations will all go towards needy families,”
“Anyone can ‘adopt’ a family,” said M.E.C.h.A club President Alexandra Tenorio, “we do this every year and the outcome is always pretty good since all of the classes get involved with it too.”
According to Esquibel and Tenorio, the drive has been in progress since before Thanksgiving, “but word hasn’t gotten out about it until just recently.”
Some teachers, such as English teacher Patricia Tripepi, have had their entire class “adopt” a family. The family in Tripepi’s case is a Grandmother supporting her six elementary school aged grandchildren.
“I think we can make a big difference in someone’s life and that always makes the holidays a little bit brighter for everyone involved,” commented Ms. Tripepi. “It’s something that I’ve done for five years now, so I always look forward to it. My students are always very generous. We’ve made around $140 so far and we still have until the 15th. It’s a good start so far.”
More information, including a list of all of the families and how to donate, can be found in Ms. Esquivel’s classroom, room 407.
M.E.C.h.A club meets on Wednesdays at 3:45 in room 407.
