The deaths of two James Logan students over the weekend has sent the school community into mourning.
Senior Izaiah Mease and Joe “Junior” Ioramo, Jr. , an 11th grade independent studies student,
were killed early Sunday morning in a automobile wreck on Interstate 880 in Hayward. A third student, Izaiah Paopao, was also in the car and is in Eden Medical Center.
At a staff meeting announcing the loss and organizing the school’s response this morning, Principal Abhi Brar said Paopao is expected to have “a long recovery ahead of him, but he’ll be okay.” Brar said he visited Paopao Sunday night.
Brar told the assemble teachers and others that Mease, 17. died at the scene, and that Ioramo, 16, had passed away on the way to Stanford Medical Center.
Brar also said that two vigils had been held on campus to memorialize the victims. The school provided amplification equipment for a four-hour vigil Monday, in which family and friends mourned and told stories about the two boys.
The deadly crash occurred in the southbound lanes near the West A Street on-ramp around 1:25 a.m. Mease drove the car, a 2004 Honda Accord that crashed into a Dodge Ram pickup truck, according to officials. The cause is under investigation.
The three boys were out for a late night snack, according to media reports.
The occupants of the truck were also injured in the crash.
Several students were obviously distressed by the loss as school opened for the Tuesday school day.
Brar told the staff that it had been “a really tough weekend,” and that the school day was “probably going to be a tough day. It’s going to be a tough week.”
He said that the school district had brought in extra counselors, psychologists and other support personnel for students, and staff, who needed them.
A lunch-time memorial activity is planned for Colt Court today.
Memorial services are pending. A gofundme account has been set up to help with funeral costs for Ioramo.
