A.I., or so called “Artificial Intelligence,” has been a very popular tool that has been used in nearly everything in our daily lives. Whether it be to help with homework or simply just to use it for entertainment. A.I has been around since the 1900s and since then has been growing in popularity.
Generally, most people would think that A.I would help. Evidently, it does. If you get stuck on a math homework, A.I apps like PhotoMath or Gauth could help you with the answers as well as the solutions. If you have nothing else to do, entertainment apps like Character A.I can help cure that boredom. “Chat with bots,” they say.
But there’s a big downside to A.I.
Anyone would probably want the answers to all their questions, especially in the work that they need most help with but then again, that shouldn’t mean that we should use A.I apps that would give us the answers so easily. How can we learn if all we do is copy the answers down without actually doing any of the work ourselves? The solutions A.I gives are deemed to be correct and helpful, but does that really help us to know how we got the answer? How are we sure that we won’t just forget it?
Using A.I apps is dangerous as well. There are certain apps that can teach you how to swap pictures’ faces with your own or any other person’s face. The article “Hundreds of sexual deepfake ads using Emma Watson’s face ran on Facebook and Instagram…” on NBC News, which was published in 2023, states that “Deepfakes are content where faces or sounds are switched out or manipulated. Commonly, deepfake creators make videos in which celebrities are made to look like they are willingly appearing in them, even though they are not.” This is how A.I works nowadays, one simple click and then boom, your face might just be on various websites.
Hence, we should always watch out for harmful activities such as these because you never know when other people or even your own peers might be exploiting your faces in different, scary situations. You shouldn’t use this information to exploit your peers either or anyone for that matter as it just shows bad morals on your part.
Some say that artworks are becoming more A.I generated nowadays and that’s true. You can sometimes clearly tell that one piece is A.I but for the most part, it’s getting harder and harder to differentiate which is which with how advanced technology is. Artists claimed multiple times about how their hard work gets mistaken badly as A.I for being too “good” or “Generated” which is completely baffling in a sense. Hate would go to them, comments like: “You use A.I!” or “You got me there, this is clearly A.I, no way you could do this.” It’s harmful enough that credit is being taken away from them but they also have to deal with negative comments that could affect their mental health which can cause artists to not want to continue anymore.
In The Harvard Gazette, an article titled “Is A.I already shaking up [the] labor market?” states that, “‘Everybody should be thinking about AI, no matter what they do for a living, Summers added. Because AI can be highly empowering. But it also means certain types of activities won’t be done by people anymore.’” As scary as that sounds, it’s highly likely that A.I would just end up taking certain jobs and people who work won’t have anything to do once that happens. Imagine this, you work as a sound designer and then suddenly you lose your job to a simple prompt of “Hey A.I, can you make me a soundtrack that has a rocky type of beat?”. How would you feel after that? Knowing that in one click of a button and a few weeds puts you out of business. Devastating right? This is what A.I and A.I companies do.
A.I, though it’s a good thing on the surface, hides a deep and darker downside to it all. It manipulates people who use the Internet. In the long run, people who simply use A.I to search for answers are feared in the future because how could you simply trust someone knowing they didn’t really learn a certain thing. It’s dangerous, it can easily grab your data or your identity and exploit it across multiple platforms.
A.I is more bad and harmful than it is good and helpful. Always rethink before using it.
