How Video Games Influence High Schoolers

Video games have become a major part of high school life. For many students, they’re more than just entertainment; they’re tools that boost thinking skills, social confidence, and even academic motivation. Many popular games demand quick decision-making, strategic planning, and problem-solving, which can strengthen memory, attention, and spatial reasoning in a way that feels more like fun than practice.

Gaming also plays a surprisingly positive role in students’ social development. Online multiplayer games give teens a space to communicate, collaborate, and build friendships beyond the classroom. For many players, winning isn’t just about scoring points; it’s about learning teamwork, leadership, and how to stay calm under pressure.

Academic performance is another area influenced by gaming. Moderate gameplay can help students relax and reduce stress, which sometimes improves focus during schoolwork. However, excessive gaming, especially late at night, can lead to poor sleep, missed assignments, and lower grades.

 

 

 

Interviews with high school students from James Logan High School illustrate this balance. Rami Kassim, who is an 11th grader, explained that games motivate him to finish his schoolwork: “It helps me finish my assignments, so I can go home and play more games.” He added that if his grades drop, his mother might take away his gaming privileges, so games actually encourage him to stay on track academically. Similarly, Antonio Virdure, who is also an 11th grader, shared that gaming positively influences his school habits: “It makes me do my homework more often because if my grades get below a C, then my games get taken away.” Both students suggest that gaming can serve as a reward system that motivates them to complete schoolwork and maintain good grades.

Video games can also support emotional well-being. High school can be stressful, and having a place to unwind matters. Rami shared that gaming helps him “take [his] anger out” and gives him something fun to focus on when he’s bored or frustrated. For many teens, games offer a safe outlet—a way to de-stress, feel accomplished, and escape pressure for a little while.

Overall, video games can positively shape students’ thinking, habits, and emotional health when used responsibly. As Rami and Antonio show, gaming isn’t just a distraction; it can motivate, inspire, and offer balance during the ups and downs of high school life.
