On Valentine’s Day, 17 victims were killed in a school shooting in Florida which had many people around the nation concerned.
Due to the recent alarming number of school shootings we wanted the perspective of Logan students on this issue.
Many students shared the same mindset when it came to this issue. Senior, Jessica Lee’s, reaction to the Florida school shooting expressed concern about intruders coming into James Logan High School.
A freshman who wanted to remain anonymous said he was scared that Logan could be in danger due to the increase in mass shootings within the last few months. “I’m scared, there have been too many school shootings lately.”
Many other students weren’t scared but instead, expressed concern.
The common line that the students say is that “Logan is really vulnerable to attacks.” Their reasoning: The lack of campus security.
Sarah Izadi, a sophomore, said, “There are people who just walk into Logan.”
Nupur Agarwal, another sophomore, has witnessed many people walking into Logan without background checks. She had also witnessed someone being able to get into Logan with an ID that wasn’t theirs. “They don’t check your ID, they just see if there is one,” she said.
Some students weren’t worried about whether or not Logan is prone to dangerous attacks.
One sophomore, Karen Arriaga, wasn’t scared of whether or not a shooting would happen at Logan. She wasn’t scared but she said, “Anyone’s capable of doing what Nikolas Cruz did.”
Though Karen believes anyone’s capable of committing a mass shooting, Karen also believes that no one capable could make their way to Logan.
One student didn’t know if he was scared or not, though, the Florida shooting has brought anger to him. Jeff, a senior, expressed his concern about guns.
Overall, the students had many mixed emotions regarding the recent shootings that have occurred.
