Driver’s Education classes will be held during both Thanksgiving break, November 23-25th, and Winter break, December 21-23rd, at the New Haven Adult School.
To receive a driver’s permit, all persons from the age of fifteen and a half to seventeen and a half need to complete Driver’s Education. These classes are highly recommended for students wishing to obtain their driver’s permit soon.
Classes will run from 7:00 am to 5:00pm. Over the three-day instruction, which adds up to 28 hours, students will take practice tests and watch instructional videos that teach safe driving techniques. After, students will receive a certificate of Driver’s Education completion that will allow them to test for a driver’s permit at the DMV. However, students must be present for all 28 hours to receive the certificate, and there are no makeup days. The three-day classes cost $125.
There is no need to pre-register and students can show up to the first day with full payment. If students wish to register early, they can stop by the New Haven Adult School during office hours to register.
Most students think that, because of the cost and hassle to go to class over break, it is easier to complete Driver’s Education online. The price of doing the lessons online varies, but it is much less than the $125 for in-class lessons.
Amber McGee, senior, did her lessons online. “I thought they were much easier for me because I learn better by myself rather than having someone talk to me. It didn’t take very long for me to do it online because, since it was broken up into sections, I told myself I would do 2 sections a day in the summer.”
Zoe Higgerson, senior, said, “I took it online a long time ago and I liked it because I could take a break if I got bored.”
Sabrina Davis, sophomore, is currently doing her lessons right now. “It’s really tedious but nice because I can pick when I do it. [However] I procrastinate a lot and I didn’t do any lessons for 2 months.”
It was hard to find anyone who took the classes at the adult school because most of the students take it online.
However, I took the classes at the adult school during winter break of my sophomore year of high school. The class size was relatively small with about twelve students. I’m almost positive that all the students came from James Logan, but I hadn’t seen any of the students around school ever.
The class was pretty helpful. I really enjoyed taking a multitude of different practice tests in order to prepare me for the driver’s permit test. The instructor, Kathy, also gave us extra tips and tricks about how to pass the driver’s license test. I didn’t enjoy some of the videos that we watched, as some were gruesome and showed appalling images. However, they did scare me enough to take driving seriously.
Apart from the cost, I think the classes are very helpful. I like that you get done with the classes in just three days rather than giving yourself a chance to procrastinate with the online class.
Either form of receiving Driver’s Education will work in order for you to get your driver’s permit. The students of James Logan should be aware of the different options so they can choose something that works best for them.
