Ballet Folklorico of James Logan High School has an enriching show coming up on Friday, May 17th!
Ballet Folklorico is one of Logan’s many cultural groups. This particular culture group doubles as a renowned and award-winning dance troupe. Jaime Huertas, a former counselor at Logan, formed the troupe and was under his direction until the end of the 2016-2017 school year. Ballet Folklorico, also known simply as Folklorico, performs many traditional dances based on regional culture in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Senior Salvador “Chava” Esquibel chimed in on what can be expected from the upcoming show saying, “new songs and new regions have been added to the setlist as well as new outfits and new choreography. People used to know what to expect with us but with these new regions we’re excited to show our audience everything that’s new.”
Junior Ivan Villanueva says that this show will, “deliver on showcasing Mexico’s beautiful culture and sensations when you feel the music and the sounds of the shoes dancing and hitting the ground. To me, it represents the heartbeat of our ancestors.”
Senior Cecilia Villa says the dynamics of the group contributes to the success of the performances. “Conflicts arise and schedules clash, but when we step on the stage we all are able to adapt quickly and push troubles aside and put on a show the audience deserves. We want people to remember how well we danced not any tension someone may be carrying within themselves.”
Senior Gaby Gutierrez says, “Practice has become very time-consuming. For this show, we’re practicing for about 5 hours instead of our usual 2 hours for any other performances we’ve had. It’s hard because we have school and some of us have work besides practice so it really shows how dedicated we are to making the show amazing.”
Be sure to catch the show and all the performers! You don’t want to miss it! Concierto Primavera will be held in the Center for the Performing Arts! The show starts at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. Special guests will be performing as well! Tickets will be $18 for students with IDs, $20 for children 12 and under and senior citizens (65+ years old), and $25 for adults.
