Acts of Random Kindness, also known as ARK, is a former club at James Logan High School. The club first began in 2014 and currently has approximately 20 members. The main purpose of this club is to spread some kindness to others in the school atmosphere. Maria Garcia, the president of ARK, first started to club as a means of attempting to relieve the stress and anxiety that several high school students counteract from certain conflicts they face. Maria stated, “A high school in Newark had a similar club to this one and concepts of caring clubs trending on social media inspired me to bring a club like that to Logan” The club is all about extending a hand towards others to show that they are really cared for, making individuals feel positive and a little relaxed. It meets every other Thursday at room 121 in Ms.Diaz’s room right after school and usually lasts about half an hour to one hour.
ARK tries to accomplish their mission through motivating campaigns, activities, and projects. This way they can make school “a little more pleasant.” The club has done many acts of random kindness such as placing clothespins on random people with compliments written on them and hanging posters in the hallway which have empowering quotes, especially ones relating to the current election. As of now, they are writing nice compliments on post its and placing them inside the books that we check out in the library to spread some positivity. According to Zainab Ahmad, a former member, what she enjoys most about the club is that, “it’s a time when all of us can relax and help others feel the same way by spreading some kindness through projects.” Brianna Wong, a long time member stated, “ It’s nice that we get to socialize and interact with others, this way it’s easier to talk to others who feel negative to make them feel better personally.” Elizabeth Cho and Katelyn Wong, recent members, stated that they would definitely continue joining the club next year if possible. As of now the club is still in need of more members, so if anyone is interested, it’s a great club to check out and it’s for a good cause.
