Tardy round-ups, which are also called tardy sweeps, happen randomly and unannounced. Tardy sweeps usually take place right after the final bell rings. During the tardy sweeps, the CST’s will go around the campus and any students that are found outside their class without a hall pass will be taken to their house office for a consequence.During the first semester of the 2014-2015 semester, there were several tardy sweeps that took place here at James Logan. At the beginning of the year, the Logan staff were emphasizing the importance of getting to class on time. Some teachers even warned their students that the staff will be very strict with tardies this year.
Logan’s principal, Ms.McNamara, reported that the consequence of a student being outside their class without a hall pass is that they will have to call home and they will receive a detention. However, Ms.McNamara stated that students run the risk of getting on exclusion for the spring semester.
Ms.McNamara expresses, “We hope that by doing these sweeps, we make students aware of the importance of being on time.” Ms.McNamara also confirmed that tardy sweeps will in fact be a year round practice here at James Logan.
So far, in second semester, there has been no tardy round-ups. Ms.McNamara confirmed that tardy round-ups will in fact be taken place during this semester. “We’ve just gotten very far behind with the many things that come up in Spring.” Ms.McNamara assured The Courier.
Over the past few years, James Logan has not been very strict about coming into class late, and students have been know to take occasional advantage of that. This year, the James Logan staff will be stepping up in order to teach the students the importance of attendance and being on time. When asked about the increased strictness on tardies, Ms.McNamara replied, “We really want to send the message home that everyday counts!”
Tardies are problems that can easily be prevented. Students should try a different route to class if the route they take makes them late to class. Students should also try to ignore the urge to talk to friends while walking to class.
“Being on time is an important skill-we need to practice it and work on it all the time,” Ms.McNamara exclaimed, “It’s the #1 reason people get fired -they are late or absent from work!”
