Perhaps the greatest things about a public education is the accessibility of many different activities and opportunities for students to experience a diverse culture. An example of this diversity is seen in one of the clubs here at James Logan High School known as the Black Student Union, or “BSU”. “BSU” meets in room 529 with adviser Dorothy Allen. The student organization’s purpose for this program is to influence and empower the student body with African and African-American history, culture and experiences that are thriving all across the globe.
This club allows many students to learn about their ancestral backgrounds and historical periods which have influences past generations and the world they experience today. In “BSU”, students discuss in groups about issues pertaining to things in modern society and apprehend on certain issues known by media regarding the black community.
When asked what else this club serves a purpose for, regarding the black community, Murelle Johnson a former student here at James Logan High addresses that, “not just only is it for Black Americans, but also other ethnicities. “BSU” opens up a hospitable environment, making a great portal for student interactions. Not only does this club take a focus into the past but most importantly into the future. Many students understand the value that BSU has on the Logan campus and many return to talk about its influence and impact it had on their lives.
