On June 19th, 2020, we got news of a mandatory rule about wearing masks that would change the way we perceive ourselves and each other. In 2020 it was just a form of protection, but now it has evolved. Students here at Logan gave us their opinions, Whether it’s wearing it to protect their family or just thinking that covid is gone. I asked 10 students what their opinions on wearing masks were.
“Even though I have all my vaccines, I still want to protect others,” said Antoinette Joseph, a Junior here at Logan. She was wearing a mask. Most people that were interviewed said the same thing. When asked if there are times she doesn’t wear a mask, she responded, “Yes, when I feel like I look good. My mask is a big thing I rely on. When I wear makeup, then I won’t wear it.” Most of the girls I interviewed said similar things.
Antoinette’s opinion helped to see how masks are more of a security blanket for most people. Even though now we’re required to wear a mask indoors, we tend to see a mix of people who wear masks and who don’t. We only really see it in the Bay Area. Outside of the Bay, we see fewer people with masks.
The next person interviewed was a Freshman, Ja’queze, who was with his friends during the interview. He said, “Take it off. Take yours off.” His friends jumped in, saying, “You’re a mask fisher, huh? Yea, she’s a mask fisher.” Ja’queze ended with a statement that “Covid is gone.” This interaction is important to add because there are still people who are disrespectful and unkind to people who wear masks. After hearing from Antoinette, we can see that this is more of a matter of looks.
Then we have people who don’t really care, like Ricky Berry, a Senior at Logan. They said, “I don’t really rock with them. But if you wanna wear them, then that’s you.” This was more of a laid-back response compared to others. When asked if there were times Ricky does wear a mask, they said, “Yeah, when I feel comfortable.” Ricky went on to say that they wear a mask when they go out in public, like at the grocery store. Ricky said that their mask is more of their personal bubble.
There was a majority of people said the same as Antoinette. Masks will forever have an impact on this generation. Covid has changed the way we see ourselves with or without masks. Here at Logan, we’ll see how people change yet again throughout the year. Maybe we’ll give an interview again at the end of the year.
