During almost any other year, skit, the class competition of skit and dancing, would have already happened, but due to a lack of transparency between the administration and students; skit got postponed from March 26th to the week of May 6th.
After a miscommunication between those in charge of skit, administrators, and the lack of sending in songs for approval in time; skit was postponed. Many students participating in skit assumed that the Activities Director, Colin Malcolm, would approve the songs they were using. Students were unaware that the songs were supposed to be sent to the administrators for approval. This led to the administrators saying that because they didn’t send the songs in time to approve or disapprove of them, skit would have to be postponed.
There was a long period of time where rumors and talk about the possibility of not having a skit at all came up due to a lack of communication. Some students even believed that the decision to cancel skit had to do with the administrators not wanting to risk something inappropriate happening during our WASC visit. All of these rumors led to student leadership requesting a meeting to air out the problems.
On April 17, the ASB Cabinet, class officers and commissioners, two administrators, and two teachers held a meeting to discuss censorship and school events. The meeting consisted of the events that led up to canceling skit, miscommunication problems, and a Song Lyric Proposal presented by Johan Casal, Senior Class President.
The administrators had “given expectations” that students would refrain from using uncensored songs, but anyone who has gone to a sports event or any event at Logan for that matter knows that this expectation wasn’t met the majority of the time.
The administrative team at the censorship meeting agreed that things sometimes happen in real time, the past cannot be changed, and although students are held to an Honor Code system, they often seem to act otherwise. After the meeting, things started progressing again for the class competition and Night Rally.
As of now, skit is back and performances have already started and will continue this week. Come back to The Courier for more skit updates this week!
